Acrylic on wood. Ash is a graduate from the class of 2013. Born and raised in San Francisco, Ash always had a passion for art. As a child he would gather inspiration from cartoons, comic books, and pop culture to create work of his own. He also creates abstract pieces of color explosions to convey feelings or emotions as he believes art is food for the soul. After all, artwork is observed through the eyes otherwise known as the window to the soul. Focusing mainly on doing artwork for video games and films, he is studying at the Academy of Art University to pursue a career in concept art.

Self Portrait
Paper, pen, plastic. Brian, Class of 2017. My name is Brian. Art means a lot to me even if I’m just doodling in my notebook or drawing a portrait. Art is a way for me to express my feeling without words which is very hard to do but with art it is easier. Art is something anyone can do at any time, even when you are on a bus or in a classroom.

Soft Pink In Movement
Watercolor block print. Janet is in the eighth grade. What I like about art is that I am able express myself through a drawing rather than words. I feel that I’m a timid person and I’d rather use drawing to give me a voice in ways that otherwise I don’t always feel like I have. Writing about how I feel has also been difficult, and then I realized my passion for art. Being able to draw was a gift and an opportunity to express myself differently. When I was young my brother taught me and as I got older I practiced more in school. I express myself through images, shapes, and nature. Hands have been in most of my drawings because our hands are used to hold each other. I want to express how hands can be used to help or hurt us. My flowers are usually draw with a variety of different flowers, colors and perspectives. In art, I typically create drawings of things that I’m most interested in; for example, I would draw the South Korean flag with music notes surrounding it because I enjoy listening to Korean music (called K-pop).

Rainbow Fox
Acrylic. Jessica is in the eighth grade. Jessica is very competitive. She enjoys basketball and volleyball because of the teamwork, and she likes to feel a sense of accomplishment when she scores a point. She is very confident in who she is and is never afraid to speak her mind. She lives in the Tenderloin. Many people think of it as a place where there is a lot of crime and drugs. However, in her view, it’s a place she calls home with a lot of diversity and opportunities for young people. Art helps her turn her thoughts and emotions into something that can inspire people.

Texture & Color
Paper, watercolor, glue. Angelika is in the seventh grade. Art is something anyone can do. I especially enjoy art because I can do anything with it. With water coloring or pastels or sculptures different things are made. If I were to create something in art it would be a huge sculpture of the tallest building because I like models, especially if they are very detailed and nice. I express myself in art by applying my feelings to my work. My favorite color is red so when I paint or use watercolor I use red because in my opinion red speaks loud and bold. I love art because in art you can express yourself in many ways.
